Producción de cobre siente el efecto de la pandemia y cae 5 % en julio

Si se compara toda la producción entre enero y julio de 2020 versus la de 2019, se observa un aumento de 1,4 % (45,9 mil toneladas más) en comparación al mismo periodo de 2019.

La producción de las mayores minas de cobre en Chile cerró mixta en julio en medio de un declive en el desempeño de la estatal Codelco, mientras el país mantiene restricciones sanitarias para contener la pandemia de coronavirus, según cifras reveladas el miércoles por el gobierno.

La Comisión Chilena del Cobre (Cochilco) informó que la producción de Codelco cayó un 4,4 % interanual a 133.300 toneladas en el séptimo mes. Con esto, acumuló un alza del 2,3 % a julio. Por su parte, la extracción de Escondida -el mayor yacimiento cuprífero del mundo y controlada por BHP- creció un 3,8 % interanual, a 100.900 toneladas. Entre enero y julio, mejoró un 4,9 %.

Collahuasi -una asociación de Glencore y Anglo American con firmas japonesas- anotó en el séptimo mes un avance interanual del 22,8 % en su producción, a 58.100 toneladas. A julio, acumuló un alza del 26,2 %.

Pese a este resultado, la producción total del país cedió un 5 % interanual en julio a 462.000 toneladas, totalizando en siete meses un alza de 1,4 % a 3,3 millones de toneladas. “Esto se debe a que las compañías reestructuraron sus planes mineros para mantener una producción más estable durante el primer semestre, lo cual se observó hasta junio, pero ya julio nos da las primeras señales de una baja de producción”, sostuvo el vicepresidente ejecutivo de Cochilco, Marco Riveros.

Para la consultora Plusmining la baja interanual “es esperable en el marco de las consecuencias de la política de mantención operacional que logró exitosamente mantener la producción en la primera parte del año, pero que, dado su exigencia, comenzará a impactar en menores niveles de producción en la segunda parte de este año y en 2021”.
