Nueva Zelanda prolongó este lunes el confinamiento, ya que, según la primera ministra Jacinda Ardern, el peak de contagios por Covid-19, provocado por la variante Delta, todavía no se alcanzó.
“(La variante) delta nos lleva ventaja y hemos tenido que ponernos al día tan rápido como hemos podido”, pero “no pienso que hayamos alcanzado el pico de este brote”, agregó.
La jefa del gobierno del país oceánico indicó que se detectaron 35 nuevas infecciones, lo que eleva el total a 107, y que unas 13 mil personas que estuvieron en contacto con personas contagiadas se someten a test. El confinamiento, que debía terminar el martes, se prolongó de nuevo hasta el viernes, salvo en Auckland, que durará hasta el 31 de agosto por la noche.
El archipiélago de unos cinco millones de habitantes ha registrado hasta el momento 26 muertos en total, lo que le ha valido alabanzas en el extranjero por su gestión de la epidemia. Sin embargo, Nueva Zelanda reconoció el domingo que la propagación de la variante Delta, más contagiosa, amenaza su estrategia “cero Covid”.
