Muere la primera profesora de Inglés de la Universidad de Atacama
A sus 94 años, falleció doña Cristina Sörensen Osorio, hija del danés Charles Sörensen Rasmussen y de la chilena Clara Osorio Díaz.
Nacida en 1928 en Chuquicamata, vivió en el campamento americano, donde vivían todos los extranjeros norteamericanos y europeos que trabajaban en las minas de ese lugar, razón por la cual, su idioma nativo fue el inglés. A los 12 años fue internada en el Instituto Santa María de Antofagasta con monjas alemanas, aprendiendo francés y alemán básico.
Cristina a sus 17 años fue Asistente de Gerencia General en Chile Exploration Company (Chilex) en Chuquicamata, y tras la muerte de su padre, decide trasladarse a Copiapó junto a su madre y hermanos, y así, a sus 18 años, comienza a trabajar como Secretaria de Gerencia de ENAMI y Traductora de Inglés Técnico en la empresa Hochschild, para unirse posteriormente, con tan sólo 27 años, como Profesora Universitaria de Inglés en la antigua Escuela de Minas, actualmente, Universidad de Atacama, siendo conocida por sus alumnos, como la “Miss Sorensen”.
Se casó con el agricultor don Claudio Bassi Pacheco Q.E.P.D. y tuvo 2 hijos; Evelyn Bassi Sorensen y Peter Bassi Sorensen, formó su familia acá en la región de Atacama, donde vivió hasta sus últimos días.
Su familia la describe como una mujer inteligente, estudiosa, delicada, sencilla, prudente y servicial. Considerada por sus vecinos como una mujer bonita, noble de espíritu y de ejemplar actitud, de gran corazón e intachable conducta.
Cristina formó parte de las familias antiguas que habitaban el Pueblo San Fernando, ejerció su profesión con gran esfuerzo, caminando por los callejones para llegar a su lugar de trabajo y preparando sus clases a la luz de las velas.
Fue una mujer amada por su familia, admirada por vecinos y recordada con cariño por sus alumnos.
Hoy, sus restos descansan junto a su marido en el Cementerio General de Copiapó.
