Tesfaye Berhe mira con preocupación las plantas de sorgo amarillentas por el sol abrasador y se pregunta si logrará salvar la cosecha, interrumpida por los combates en la región etíope de Tigré.

El agricultor de 60 años, con barba gris, tuvo que poner pies en polvorosa cuando en noviembre empezaron a caer obuses de artillería en las inmediaciones de sus campos, cerca de la aldea de Ayasu Gebriel.

En el este, los disparos procedían del ejército federal, al oeste, de las fuerzas del Frente de Liberación del Pueblo de Tigré (TPLF), el partido que gobernaba esta región disidente y desafiaba al Estado desde hacía meses.

La emergencia obligó a Tesfaye a abandonar la cosecha de teff, un cereal clave en la dieta etíope. La perdió y ahora teme perder también la de sorgo, aunque el gobierno asegura que los combates han terminado.

“Escuchamos decir que sigue habiendo combatientes en ambas direcciones. Nos preocupa si podremos o no comer lo que estamos cosechando, si vuelven”, afirma.

Tigré, una región pobre del norte de Etiopía con 6 millones de habitantes, ya sufría problemas de seguridad alimentaria antes de que comenzara la guerra el 4 de noviembre. Además de la epidemia del coronavirus, 2020 estuvo marcado por la peor invasión de langostas del desierto en décadas.
