Liceo Católico Atacama: 290 años al servicio de la Educación

En 1953 se establece al 22 de junio, como el día del Liceo Católico Atacama, debido a que, a pesar de que el establecimiento venía funcionando desde 1732 en la esquina de Chañarcillo con Yerbas Buenas, para ése año, todavía no contaba con un día establecido para celebrarlo como correspondía a una institución de tanta trascendencia en la sociedad e historia de Copiapó y Atacama. Fueron los sacerdotes franciscanos belgas quienes establecieron la fecha, quienes habían asumido la administración del establecimiento en 1938, cuando éste solo funcionaba como Escuela Parroquial Emeterio Goyenechea Gallo, la cual venía funcionando desde 1888, cuando reemplazó a la Escuela de La Merced, con la llegada de los sacerdotes escolapios a su administración.

El colegio inicia su labor bajo el alero de los sacerdotes mercedarios, quienes habían llegado a Copiapó en 1722 y dos años más tarde levantan una iglesia, un convento y posteriormente una escuela, en las mismas cuatro cuadras que la Iglesia en parte mantiene en torno a las calles Chañarcillo y Yerbas Buenas. Estos sacerdotes llegaron a Chile con Diego de Almagro y Pedro de Valdivia y fueron quienes oficiaron en el valle de Copiapó, la primera misa y el tedeum de posesión del reino de Chile.

La escuela de La Merced fue la única que existía para el nacimiento de la república, figurando con 60 alumnos en el primer CENSO efectuado por los hermanos Carrera. Es en este establecimiento dónde se formaron gran parte de los próceres del Copiapó de la primera mitad del siglo XIX, puesto que fue la única que existió hasta la fundación de la escuela Bruno Zavala, en 1868, la cual, por lo demás, surge en sus dependencias.

En 1872 comienza la enseñanza secundaria con la implementación del Colegio Católico de Atacama, el cual en 1892 adscribe al formato de Liceo, pasando a ser el Liceo Católico de Atacama hasta 1903, cuando es denominado Liceo Alemán de Copiapó, el primer liceo Alemán de Chile, bajo la administración de los sacerdotes del Verbo Divino. El nivel secundario se mantiene hasta 1917 y es en este período cuando recibe la visita, en dos ocasiones, del Presidente Manuel Montt, quién quedó sorprendido con los experimentos de Rayos X y de telegrafía inalámbrica que en esos años de realizaban en el Liceo y que, eran desconocidos en el país en aquel tiempo.

Producto de la Primera Guerra Mundial, los sacerdotes alemanes abandonan Copiapó y con ello se cierra la enseñanza secundaria del colegio, la cual es reabierta en 1953 bajo el nombre de Liceo Católico Atacama, como respuesta de parte de la Iglesia a la solicitud de los gobiernos radicales para que abriese escuelas y liceos, y de esta manera, dar respuesta a la alta demanda por educación que se estaba produciendo en el país, para lo cual se crea la Ley de Subvención Escolar en 1951.

En 1967 la enseñanza media vuelve a cerrar, esta vez por la negativa de los parlamentarios anticlericales de aprobar la subvención escolar en la Ley de Presupuesto, desde la asunción del Gobierno de Frei en 1965. Por esta razón, nuevamente solo continúa la enseñanza básica, pero esta vez bajo el nombre de Escuela Nuestra Señora del Carmen, “el Carmelo”.

Hacia 1970 el Liceo vuelve a ser aperturado bajo el nombre de Liceo Mixto Sagrado Corazón, en forma conjunta con el liceo Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, situación que se mantiene hasta 1979.

En 1980 el liceo vuelve a retomar su nombre que traía desde la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, Liceo Católico Atacama, pero esta vez en unidad con la enseñanza básica y parvularia, que es cómo funciona hoy día.

El Liceo Católico Atacama en sus 290 años de funcionamiento en Chañarcillo esquina Yernas Buenas, ha sido un colegio de excelencia, altamente exigente y meritocrático. Entre sus egresados hay un sinnúmero de personas de renombre que han contribuido al desarrollo de nuestra sociedad, producto de que prácticamente el 100% de sus egresados, año tras año, continúan estudios superiores y de ellos, sobre el 95% lo hace en Universidades adscritas al Sistema Único de Admisión.

Hoy en día el establecimientodepende del Obispado de Copiapó y es administrado por una Fundación que es presidida por la señorita Paola Ortiz Meneses y su rectoría es ejercida por la educadora Erna Fuenzalida Lazo.
