La Locomotora “La Copiapó” y su viaje del 4 de julio de 1851

 Hoy 4 de julio, se cumple un nuevo aniversario de lo que fue el gran hito para Atacama en materia de desarrollo económico y de transportes, como lo fue la puesta en funcionamiento del primer tren de Chile.

Este tema es destacado por el Profesor Guillermo Cortes Lutz, Doctor en Historia e integrante del Grupo de Estudios de Atacama GEA.

Señala que “producto de la bonanza económica  que vivía  Copiapó   desde 1832 y en adelante , con el descubrimiento el mineral de plata de  Chañarcillo, realizado  por Juan Godoy,  los grandes beneficiarios de esta riqueza, los empresarios mineros. Donde  encontramos a  los Gallo, Matta, Edwars (los  de la famosa familia plutócrata), Jotabeche, Ossa Varas, Subercaseaux, Cousiño, entre otros,  se deciden a poner en marcha la compañía de ferrocarriles de Copiapó, la cual pone en funciones  el primer ferrocarril chileno.  Fue el estadounidense Guillermo Wheelwrigth, quien lidera la empresa de llevar un tren desde Caldera a Copiapó, y luego desde allí hasta Chañarcillo.  Todo indica que en abril de 1851 habría habido una primera prueba hasta Alto del Fraile, pero hasta ahora hemos aceptado que el 4 de julio de 1851, sería el viaje inaugural. Se habría elegido esta fecha , como un homenaje a la independencia de Estados Unidos, ya que Wheelwrigth era de la nación del norte, y también  podríamos agregar que,  quizás fue un guiño al 4 de julio, pero de 1811,  cuando se habría inaugurado  nuestro primer Congreso Nacional”.

 Continúa su narración indicando que “las primeras estaciones, fueron:   Alto del Fraile, Monteamargo, Piedra Colgada, Toledo y finalmente Copiapó; uniendo 81 kilómetros. La  llegada del ferrocarril  a Copiapó fue el 25 de diciembre de 1851.  La locomotora que hizo el viaje inaugural fue conocida como “La Copiapó”.  Hoy está en la Universidad de Atacama”.

“Hay que recordar que para aquella época,  mediados del siglo XIX, solo nosotros, Copiapó, podíamos hacer algo tan potente.  El ferrocarril fue la revolución de las comunicaciones, del transporte y puso a Copiapó y a  la región de Atacama a la cabeza del progreso chileno.

Por ello, debemos recordar, conocer y comprender nuestra patrimonio, porque en él está la clave de un  mañana mejor.  La Historia Sí importa”, indica finalmente el profesor Cortés Lutz.

    Una pequeña acotación: Se entiende que para que la mayoría de chilenos no muy versados con el idioma inglés se decidió llamar como Guillermo Wheelwright al diseñador de la locomotora que sirvió al primer servicio ferroviario en Chile, en vez de llamarle por su nombre propio en inglés (William Wheelwright en este caso). Lo que deja que desear es la tipografía usada (el apellido mal finalizado como Wheelwhrigth, en lugar de la forma correcta antes indicada) Cuidado con eso, un medio de informaciones debe respetar celosamente la gramática, ortografía y redacción para evitar malos entendidos y que los lectores asuman como correctas las formas erróneas de escritura.
