Los precios de los metales industriales tocaban nuevos mínimos de varios años al finalizar la semana , con el cobre y el zinc en sus niveles más débiles en más de tres años, ante el temor a una pandemia de coronavirus que erosionaría aún más la demanda de insumos básicos.
Países de tres continentes reportaron el viernes sus primeros casos del coronavirus, mientras el mundo se preparaba para una epidemia global y los inversores se deshacían de las acciones ante una marcada aversión a los activos de riesgo.
En China continental, el mayor consumidor mundial de metales, se reportaron 327 nuevos casos, la cifra más baja desde el 23 de enero, lo que llevaba a más de 78.800 el número de contagios. Unas 2.800 personas han muerto en el país. El cobre a tres meses en la Bolsa de Metales de Londres (LME) perdía 0,53% a 5.583,50 dólares la tonelada a las 1153 GMT, luego de haber cedido un 1% en la víspera.
Los precios del metal utilizado como una medición de la salud económica bajaron el miércoles hasta los 5.574,5 dólares la tonelada, su menor nivel desde el 4 de febrero, y acumulan un retroceso de más de un 10% desde mediados de enero.
“Los vientos en contra para los precios de los metales básicos podrían persistir en el corto plazo. La situación en China se está estabilizando, pero la demanda para la industria de la construcción no ha repuntado lo suficiente”, dijo Xiao Fu, jefe de estrategias de mercados de Bank of China International.
