CDCopiapó tuvo un amargo final de primera rueda del Torneo de Ascenso 2022, tras caer en un complicado partido contra Cobreloa por 2-0 como visitante. El conjunto copiapino pagó caro el mal primer tiempo y no pudo igualar en la segunda parte a pesar de tener varias ocasiones, mientras que Cobreloa sentenció en los últimos minutos jugando al contragolpe. Sin embargo, Cano impidió el gol tras un excelente tiro libre de Marco Medel y luego, el palo evitó que entrara un zapatazo de 40 metros del Maxi Quinteros.
Cuando mejor jugaba CDCopiapó, Cobreloa marcó el segundo y definitivo gol. Al minuto 83, David Escalante se llevó por delante a dos defensores copiapinos y encaró libre a Richard Leyton, quien no pudo hacer nada ante la calmada definición del delantero loíno. El conjunto copiapino siguió insistiendo, pero no estuvo fino de cara al arco.
Con este resultado, el León de Atacama se mantuvo en la quinta posición y en zona de liguilla, pero más lejos de Magallanes, Cobreloa y San Felipe (un partido pendiente), quienes se alejaron en el podio del torneo. Culmina la primera rueda del Torneo Nacional de Primera B para el conjunto copiapino que ahora deberá esperar hasta el 10 de julio para disputar la segunda fecha de la rueda final del torneo ante Unión San Felipe, ya que descansa en la primera fecha.
