A nivel mundial, la población se ha cuadruplicado en los últimos cien años. Anualmente ocurren 136 millones de nacimientos, 10 millones de éstos fallecen antes de cumplir 5 años y 8 millones antes del primer año de vida.
Un factor común en estas muertes es la salud de la madre. Cada año, más de medio millón de mujeres mueren anualmente debido a complicaciones del embarazo y el alumbramiento.
Los bebés cuyas madres han muerto durante el parto tienen una mucha mayor posibilidad de morir en su primer año que aquellos cuyas madres permanecen vivas.
El 99% de los casos de mortalidad materna y de los recién nacidos ocurre en el mundo en desarrollo, donde más de un 50% de las mujeres aún dan a luz sin la asistencia de personal sanitario capacitado. Se trata de una reveladora muestra de la desigualdad en materia de acceso a la atención de la salud de buena calidad.
La situación materno-infantil adquiere, por lo tanto, características de emergencia epidemiológica, con necesidad de intervenciones urgentes a nivel mundial. Los indicadores de salud materno-infantil son considerados un reflejo del resultado de toda la situación de salud de un país. Representan el resultado de una sumatoria de factores económicos, educacionales, nutricionales y de acceso a redes de protección social.
¿CÓMO AYUDA ROTARY?
A nivel Internacional Rotary ofrece educación, inmunizaciones, kits de parto y clínicas móviles. Se realizan clases de sensibilización a las mujeres para prevenir la transmisión del VIH de madre a bebé, promover la lactancia y cómo evitar enfermedades.
PROGRAMAS SOSTENIBLES
Rotary implementa programas para mejorar el acceso a personal de la salud capacitado: médicos, enfermeras, parteras o trabajadores sanitarios de la comunidad.
NIÑOS SALUDABLES DURANTE
EL PRIMER AÑO DE VIDA
Los socios de Rotary promueven programas de lactancia, vacunas y chequeos regulares y distribuyen, además, mosquiteros tratados con insecticida.
PARTOS ASÉPTICOS
Los socios de Rotary distribuyen kits para partos asépticos y capacitan a trabajadores de la salud en técnicas seguras de alumbramiento.
EQUIPO HOSPITALARIO
PARA SALVAR VIDAS
Clubes rotarios de Japón y Brasil utilizaron una Subvención Global para proveer a un hospital de equipos neonatales para salvar la vida de recién nacidos.
En el Calendario de Rotary, Abril es el Mes de la Salud Materno-Infantil, y es donde Rotary pone de manifiesto su compromiso para la mejora de las condiciones de vida de las madres y niños de todo el mundo.
Los rotarios amplían el acceso a una atención de calidad, de modo que las madres y los niños de todo el mundo puedan tener las mismas oportunidades para un futuro saludable.
