El virus SARS-CoV-2, responsable de la pandemia de la Covid-19, también es activo en las secreciones oculares de los pacientes positivos y, por tanto, puede ser otra fuente de contagio.
Este fue el resultado de una investigación realizada por el Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Infecciosas «Lazzaro Spallanzani» de Roma.
El estudio publicado por la revista Annals of Internal Medicine describe que, tras una muestra ocular tomada tres días después del ingreso de un paciente positivo, hospitalizado en el hospital de Spallanzani a fines de enero y que tenía conjuntivitis bilateral, los investigadores de Spallanzani lograron aislar el virus.
