Demanda de cobre caería en 1,4 millones de toneladas en 2020

A inicios de junio y en el marco de un webinar que la Sociedad Nacional de Minería (Sonami) organizó para sus socios, esta firma inglesa de análisis de commodities proyectaba para este año una contracción de unas 700 mil toneladas en la oferta mundial de cobre de mina. Y ahora, menos de un mes después, ese cálculo se empina sobre el millón de toneladas, respecto de la proyección que manejaban en enero pasado, en un escenario pre covid-19.

Hasta ahora la pérdida efectiva de producción bordea las 500 mil toneladas. Un primer factor que fundamenta la proyección de la consultora son los recortes de producción adoptados por compañías como Freeport McMoRan -en Chile y Estados Unidos- en respuesta al desfavorable escenario de precio que el cobre venía arrastrando desde el año pasado.

El segundo elemento son las disrupciones asociadas a la paralización de faenas en países como Perú, Panamá e Indonesia, debido al alto número de contagios entre sus trabajadores. En tercer lugar, mencionan la menor productividad, asociada a las medidas de control sanitario implementadas.

Estas proyecciones agregan un elemento adicional, que apunta a que la menor producción se podría extender al 2021 en aproximadamente 120 mil toneladas de cobre fino, que estarían en riesgo el próximo año. A nivel mundial, ellos esperan que la producción caiga entre 870 mil y 1,5 millones de toneladas. Este año el consumo mundial caerá en 1,4 millones de toneladas.

Si por el lado de la oferta de cobre las proyecciones no son favorables, la situación respecto de la demanda no es mucho mejor. Se estima que, pese a la rápida recuperación observada en China, el rezago que tendrá el mundo occidental en su retorno a niveles productivos normales haría caer la demanda en torno a un 6,5% respecto a las estimaciones previas al covid-19. Es decir, el consumo mundial caerá en 1,4 millones de toneladas, de las cuales unas 800 mil toneladas corresponden a un impacto estructural, pues sería una demanda que podría recuperarse recién hacia 2024.
