Comienza la operación Héroes de Atacama: el próximo 4 de noviembre trasladan los restos del batallón desde el Cementerio hasta la Capilla del Regimiento Copiapó

La Cripta de los Batallones de Atacama ha sido clasificada como un Monumento Público que quedó bajo la tuición del Consejo de Monumentos Nacionales. A raíz del aluvión de marzo de 2015 que afectó a la Región de Atacama, este Monumento resultó seriamente dañado debido al sedimento que arrastró la crecida del Río Copiapó. A partir de esto, los restos de los “Héroes de Atacama” fueron exhumados y trasladados para su custodia transitoria en el Cementerio Municipal en abril de ese año y, hasta la fecha, se mantienen en el mismo lugar.

Durante el año 2020, el Gobierno, a través de la entonces Gobernación Provincial de Copiapó, dio inicio a la coordinación con distintos Servicios Públicos que permitieron realizar un catastro de los restos óseos y el estado de la cripta para desarrollar un plan de acción que permitiera avanzar y materializar una solución definitiva para el diseño y construcción o mejora del actual Monumento Público.

Ayer viernes, en un punto de prensa, el Delegado Presidencial Regional, Patricio Urquieta, junto al Comandante del Regimiento Nº 23 Copiapó, Coronel Álvaro Salgado, el Gobernador Regional, Miguel Vargas y la Administradora Municipal, Eva Rojas, dieron a conocer la planificación de las actividades a desarrollar como resultado de este trabajo conjunto.

La primera fase, según destacó el Delegado Presidencial, Patricio Urquieta, se trata del traslado transitorio de restos de óseos de los Batallones de Atacama.
“Hoy, después del aluvión, los Héroes de Atacama están en el Cementerio Municipal, y queremos trasladarlos transitoriamente hacia el Regimiento, donde van a estar en la capilla, y lo vamos a hacer en un ciclo de charlas abiertas a la comunidad para dar a conocer los alcances que tuvo la participación cívico-militar de los integrantes de nuestra región y que, finalmente se convirtieron en historia de Chile, y creo que vale la pena recordarlo”.

Asimismo, Urquieta destacó que “Hoy queremos dar a conocer el esfuerzo interinstitucional que se ha hecho para poder honrar la memoria de los Héroes de Atacama, y lo hemos hecho a partir de la necesidad de poder darle el lugar que se merecen a las personas que integraron las filas del ejército en los batallones cívico-militares que protagonizaron la Guerra del Pacífico y nosotros creemos que darles el lugar que se merecen es una necesidad y una obligación moral que tenemos que asumir con todas sus consecuencias para poder realizar la inversión necesaria para poder honrar su memoria y cumplir con ese mandato que tenemos todos de poder hacernos parte del trabajo de mejorar las condiciones en las cuales se encuentran actualmente los Héroes de Atacama”.

Por su parte, el Coronel Álvaro Salgado dio a conocer el programa de la primera fase: “El día 2 y el día 3 de noviembre, en el Centro Cultural, se va a desarrollar una charla por parte del Sr. Bernardo Tornini Scola a las 19:30 que está abierta a todo el público que quiera concurrir. El día 4 de noviembre, está previsto el desplazamiento a través de una columna motorizada que parte desde el Cementerio Municipal, toma Copayapu, por calle Atacama, va a pasar por la Plaza de Armas, O’Higgins, y termina en el sector de la calle vicuña hacia el Regimiento, donde se va a realizar una ceremonia a las 20:30 hrs. a la cual el Ejército estaría muy feliz de que concurriera la mayor cantidad de gente posible de acuerdo a los aforos establecidos, y en esa ceremonia vamos a destacar el valor del Batallón Atacama, para posteriormente hacer un traslado de los restos de las urnas a la capilla, y al día siguiente haremos una misa por el descanso en paz y terminamos el día 5 con el lanzamiento de la segunda edición del libro Batallones de Atacama”.

Salgado dijo que “creo que esta es una oportunidad que tenemos nosotros de conocer más el Batallón de Atacama, darle la importancia que tuvo y rendir un justo homenaje que producto muchas situaciones no se había realizado antes”.

En tanto, el Gobernador Regional, Miguel Vargas, dijo que “Quiero destacar el esfuerzo de coordinación interinstitucional coordinado por el ejército, por el Comandante Salgado, con participación activa de la Delegación Presidencial, el municipio, el Gobierno Regional, la ex Gobernación Provincial de Copiapó, todos aportando en un gran proyecto que es más que el traslado de los restos del Batallón desde el cementerio hacia el regimiento y con posterioridad a la cripta definitiva, sino que es poner en valor lo que representan los Batallones de Atacama para la historia e identidad de la región. De los Batallones tenemos que hablar siempre, porque son parte de nuestra historia. Tenemos que conocer quienes integraban este glorioso ejército con una participación muy importante en la guerra del Pacífico, por lo tanto, es un deber para todos nosotros, conocer en detalle lo que representan, ese es el valor que tiene esta iniciativa que cuenta con la participación de muchas instituciones y en la cual el Gobierno Regional va a colaborar en lo que esté a su alcance para que se logren los objetivos”.

Finalmente, Eva Rojas, Administradora Municipal, señaló “Nosotros desde que asumimos la gestión municipal, y posterior al aluvión del 2015, nos enteramos de la situación que tenían nuestros Héroes de Atacama y desde ese minuto se iniciaron las conversaciones para hacer este traslado que le iba a dar dignidad a nuestros Héroes de Atacama, pero tenemos que agradecer que efectivamente hoy día podemos llegar a buen término”
