Caza de rinocerontes aumentó un 50% en el primer semestre en Sudáfrica
La caza furtiva de rinocerontes aumentó un 50 por ciento en la primera mitad de 2021 en Sudáfrica, el país que alberga la mayor colonia de estos animales del mundo, después de un 2020 en el que el número de ejemplares asesinados había bajado mucho a consecuencia de las restricciones de la pandemia del Covid-19.
Sudáfrica difundió estas cifras oficiales con motivo del Día Mundial de los Guardabosques, junto a un mensaje de agradecimiento a los encargados de cuidar la naturaleza sudafricana incluso a riesgo de sus vidas.
Las cifras al alza de la primera mitad de este año suceden a un 2020 en el que la caza furtiva de estos grandes mamíferos en peligro se había visto reducida de manera notable (-33 por ciento).
Pero este logro se había obtenido en buena parte debido a las circunstancias especiales impuestas por la pandemia, en especial las limitaciones de movimiento tanto dentro del país como a nivel internacional por la epidemia de Covid-19. Sudáfrica, de hecho, mantuvo cerradas sus fronteras desde finales de marzo de 2020 hasta el siguiente octubre.
Con la reapertura del país, ya a finales del año pasado se había visto un incremento de las muertes respecto a la primera mitad de 2020.
