Congreso virtual abordó los desafíos hídricos para el agro en zonas desérticas

* Más de 350 espectadores de Atacama, Chile y el mundo participaron en este seminario organizado por la Agencia de Sustentabilidad y Cambio Climático, el Programa Territorial Integrado (PTI) Uva de Mesa Atacama de Corfo y APECO.

Con el interés de dimensionar los problemas de disponibilidad de agua para el desarrollo socioeconómico y humano que hoy enfrenta el país, así como la importancia del aprovechamiento de las zonas desérticas para su uso agrícola, se realizó el congreso “Eficiencia hídrica para la producción agrícola en zonas desérticas”.
La instancia contó con la participación de una serie de expertos, quienes entregaron conocimiento, experiencias e iniciativas para establecer la seguridad hídrica en empresas y territorios. 

El seremi de Agricultura, Patricio Araya, junto al director de la Agencia de Sustentabilidad y Cambio Climático (ASCC), Giovanni Calderón, y el subdirector regional de Corfo Atacama Pedro Maturana, inauguraron este congreso virtual, que estuvo dirigido a todo público, especialmente de Atacama.

“Atacama es una región que en forma permanente convive con la sequía y su desafío es desarrollar una agricultura competitiva en estas condiciones”, destacó la autoridad regional de Agricultura, Patricio Araya, y añadió que “como cartera nos hemos preocupado por apoyar la implementación de proyectos que permitan aprovechar el recurso hídrico de manera más eficiente, el revestimiento de canales, construcción de embalses de acumulación, telemetría, entre otras obras”.

En tanto Giovanni Calderón, director ejecutivo de la ASCC, sostuvo que a pesar de que Chile es el principal exportador de uva de mesa del mundo “nos ha salido competencia que viene desde el sur del Perú. Y es, básicamente, porque observamos en ese país una mejor gestión del recurso hídrico, en base a una institucionalidad más sólida, la existencia de una autoridad nacional del agua y una concentración de las competencias en materia de agua. A las condiciones naturales de la región de Atacama, sumamos el problema de la disponibilidad de agua en la cuenca de Copiapó y además la mega sequía de más de 12 años”.

Por su parte, el subdirector de Corfo Atacama, Pedro Maturana, destacó que “la eficiencia hídrica es uno de los ejes prioritarios del PTI de Uva de Mesa, es por ello, que este tipo de jornadas son claves porque creemos que es fundamental contar con la mayor cantidad de información para avanzar en los desafíos productivos del sector, y también para enfrentar los efectos del cambio climático en la industria”.

Las exposiciones del mundo académico estuvieron a cargo de Pablo Álvarez, director del Consorcio Centro Tecnológico del Agua Quitai Anko ejecutado por la Universidad de La Serena, quien abordó la oferta y demanda hídrica. En tanto, Julio Haberland, director del Grupo de Estudios del Agua (GEA) de la Universidad de Chile, se refirió a la productividad del agua. En tanto, desde México, Juan Hernández, subgerente de Evaluación y Seguimiento en la Gerencia de Distritos de Riego de la Comisión Nacional del Agua (Conagua), abordó la sustentabilidad hídrica en condiciones de escasez de agua.

Por parte del sector público, Johanna Guzmán, encargada Nacional del Control y Supervisión de Acuerdos de ASCC, explicó sobre la iniciativa Certificado Azul, mientras que Nicolás Verdugo, investigador del Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIA) Intihuasi, se centró en las buenas prácticas agrícolas y de adaptación y mitigación al cambio climático.

Finalmente, los productores regionales de uva de mesa Felipe Rojas y Rodrigo Gaytán, junto al asesor de riego Rodrigo Gálvez, y Nelson Núñez, Gerente del PTI Uva de Mesa Atacama, estuvieron a cargo de las conclusiones de la jornada con especial foco en las oportunidades y desafíos de la investigación, transferencia de información necesaria  para mejorar la eficiencia en el uso del agua, la obtención de certificaciones y valoración de sellos que reflejen el buen uso del agua para obtener productos agrícolas en condiciones de desierto. El evento virtual fue patrocinado por la Seremi de Agricultura Región de Atacama, la Asociación de Productores de Uva de Mesa de Alto del Carmen (APAC), GEA de la  Universidad de Chile y el Consorcio Centro Tecnológico del Agua Quitai Anko y ProChile.
