Cinco meses subiendo sin parar y por encima de los US$ 3: el cobre y las buenas noticias para la economía chilena
Poco a poco la situación de la economía chilena va mostrando síntomas de mejoría tras la peor crisis desde la década de los ochenta. Y en estos atisbos de brotes verdes una de las mejores noticias para la actividad y sobre todo las arcas fiscales ha sido el precio del cobre, el principal producto de exportación del país.
Aunque hoy (ayer) no hubo transacciones en la Bolsa de Metales de Londres, en algunas operaciones electrónicas el precio se mantiene muy saludablemente por encima de la barrera de los US$ 3 por libra, su cota más alta desde mediados de junio de 2018.
Centavos más centavos menos, lo cierto es que la materia prima pasa por un auspicioso momento. Claro porque se despidió de agosto con un alza acumulada de 4,37%, completando así su quinto mes consecutivo al alza, de acuerdo a los registros de Cochilco.
El commodity cayó a su nivel más bajo del año el 23 de marzo pasado, en medio de la incertidumbre por el coronavirus -que golpeaba especialmente a las economías asiáticas. Ese día estuvo a punto de perder la barrera de los US$ 2 (se cotizó en US$ 2,094). Desde ahí, la curva del cobre sólo fue hacia arriba y ya acumula una ganancia de 45,71%.
En el año sube un 9,3% y el precio promedio de la libra ya se ubica a US$ 2,62, acercándose a los niveles de 2019 cuando el mundo no tenía idea sobre el Covid-19.
El fuerte repunte de la materia prima ha ido de la mano de la mayor demanda por parte de las grandes economías del planeta, a medida que se levantan las medidas de restricción para contener la pandemia y se recupera la actividad.
Y dentro de estas economías, obviamente destaca China, el mayor consumidor de cobre del mundo y principal socio comercial de Chile. En julio, las ganancias de las empresas industriales aumentaron por tercer mes consecutivo, siendo el ritmo más acelerado desde junio de 2018. Esto, a medida que el sector manufacturero se recupera lentamente de la caída inducida por el Covid-19.
Hoy, de hecho, las bolsas subían apoyadas en nuevos datos de China que reflejaban la buena salud de la segunda mayor economía del mundo. El precio del cobre también se ha visto favorecido por el retroceso del dólar, que en estos días ha caído a mínimos no vistos también en dos años. Un dólar más bajo abarata la adquisición de la materia prima.
La caída del dólar se pronunció en las últimas horas con el anuncio de la Reserva Federal respecto a que reafirmara su compromiso con una política monetaria expansiva.
