En contraparte, la vital actividad minera creció un 1,6 %, aunque con un dinamismo menor que el del trimestre anterior. Por su parte el Producto Interno Bruto desestacionalizado entre abril y junio bajó un 13,2 %.

El Producto Interno Bruto (PIB) de Chile cayó un 14,1 % interanual en el segundo trimestre con respecto al mismo período del año anterior, producto de las restricciones para enfrentar la pandemia de coronavirus, según datos divulgados el martes por el Banco Central.

La cifra se compara desfavorablemente con la expansión de 0,2 % registrada en el primer trimestre; y el valor publicado fue levemente peor de lo esperado, ya que el mercado proyectaba que sólo fuera de -14 %. Se trata del peor registro desde la crisis económica de 1982 (de cuando el Producto Interno Bruto -PIB- fue de -13,6 %) y de los datos oficiales que datan desde 1986.

“Este resultado se vio incidido por la emergencia sanitaria asociada al covid-19, que influyó en la movilidad de las personas y el normal funcionamiento de establecimientos productivos”, dijo el banco en su informe.

El organismo explicó que, desde la perspectiva del gasto, los efectos de las restricciones se reflejaron en un menor consumo de los hogares y en la inversión. Con esto, la demanda interna retrocedió un 19,1 % en los tres meses a junio y el consumo de los hogares presentó una disminución de 22,4 %.

“Las actividades mayormente afectadas fueron servicios personales, comercio, transporte, construcción, restaurantes y hoteles, industria manufacturera y servicios empresariales”, agregó. Además, “todos los movimientos presentaron caídas con excepción de la minería, los servicios financieros y la administración pública”.

Durante el segundo trimestre, la cuenta corriente de la balanza de pagos registró un superávit de 1.154 millones de dólares, equivalente a 2,1% del PIB trimestral, impulsado por el saldo positivo en la balanza comercial de bienes.

Desde inicios de marzo las autoridades sanitarias impusieron diversas medidas, incluyendo estrictas cuarentenas, para contener la expansión del Covid-19, que ya suma cerca de 390.000 contagios y más de 10.000 fallecidos en el país.
