Beirut se conmociona tras violenta explosión, muertos suman al menos 100
Trabajadores de rescate libaneses cavaban el miércoles entre los escombros de edificios en busca de supervivientes de la poderosa explosión de un almacén que envió una devastadora ola expansiva en todo Beirut, causando la muerte de al menos 100 personas y dejando más de 4.000 heridos.
Las autoridades dijeron que la cifra de muertos podría seguir aumentando luego del estallido el martes en los almacenes portuarios que guardaban material altamente explosivo.

El incidente generó una enorme nube en forma de hongo y llegó a sacudir ventanas en la isla de Chipre, en el Mediterráneo, a unos 160 kilómetros de distancia.
El presidente del Líbano, Michel Aoun, dijo que 2.750 toneladas de nitrato de amonio, usado en fertilizantes y bombas, habían sido almacenadas durante seis años en el puerto sin medidas de seguridad, y dijo que eso era “inaceptable”.
Aoun dijo que el Gobierno estaba “resuelto a investigar y exponer lo que ocurrió lo más pronto posible, para hacer responsables y develar la negligencia, y sancionarlos con las penas más severas”.
Una fuente oficial vinculada a las investigaciones preliminares indicó que la explosión ocurrió por “inacción y negligencia”, afirmando que las autoridades judiciales y municipales no habían hecho nada por remover el material peligroso.
Los libaneses de a pie, muchos del cuales han perdido sus trabajos y vieron sus ahorros evaporarse por la crisis financiera en el Líbano, culpaban a los políticos que han dirigido a la nación durante décadas en medio de una extendida corrupción y administración ineficiente.
“Es una catástrofe para Beirut y para el Líbano”, dijo el alcalde de la capital, Jamal Itani, a Reuters mientras inspeccionaba los daños ocasionados por la explosión, que se estimaron en miles de millones de dólares.
El jefe de la Cruz Roja libanesa, George Kettani, dijo que al menos 100 personas perdieron la vida y que los esfuerzos de búsqueda y rescate continuaban.

Sara, una enfermera del Centro Médico Clemenceau de Beirut, describió escenas en el hospital donde trabaja “como si estuviera en medio de un matadero, con sangre que cubría los corredores y los ascensores”.
Las fachadas de edificios del centro de Beirut quedaron destrozadas, con muebles destruidos sobre las calles y caminos, que además estaban llenos de escombros y vidrios rotos. Muchos vehículos cerca del área portuaria quedaron volcados.
