Papa está «muy afligido» por reconversión de Santa Sofía
El papa Francisco dijo este domingo que está «muy afligido» por la reconversión de la antigua basílica de Santa Sofía de Estambul en mezquita por decisión del presidente turco, al término de la oración del Ángelus. «Mi pensamiento va a Estambul. Pienso en Santa Sofía. Estoy muy afligido», dijo brevemente el papa, fuera del discurso previsto.
Estas palabras del papa son el primer comentario del Vaticano sobre la decisión turca. El Osservatore Romano, el diario del Vaticano, había informado la víspera de los hechos, citando las principales reacciones internacionales, pero no había emitido comentarios.
Santa Sofía, construida en el siglo VI por los bizantinos que coronaban allí a sus emperadores, está declarada por la Unesco Patrimonio de la Humanidad y es una de las principales atracciones turísticas de Estambul, con unos 3,8 millones de visitantes en 2019.
El presidente turco, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, que promueve esta medida desde hace años, rechazó estas condenas internacionales, argumentando que se trata de «derechos soberanos» de su país. (AFP).
