Pedro León Gallo: 109 años de historia oculta en museos

El director de la galería histórica de Atacama indica que sería bueno que, de una vez por toda, los relatos de estos hechos entren a las aulas.

A los 109 años del natalicio de Pedro León Gallo las autoridades de la Región de Atacama no se han interesado en incluir su historia, lucha y logros en un programa pedagógico que difunda la batalla revolucionaria que este caudillo impulsó, como parte del patrimonio cultural.

Al menos eso es lo que, hoy en día, lamenta Guillermo Cortez Lutz, director del Museo Regional de Atacama, quien considera que, pese a que existen liderazgos académicos como universidades centros de estudios superiores que tienen como obligación generar educación formal, en la práctica no se hace.

Él considera que, a propósito de este aniversario, sería importante que tanto la región como la Provincia de Copiapó y principalmente su capital local, recordaran a “este ilustre personaje para que podamos comprender la importancia de nuestra historia”.

Cortez puntualiza que es factible generar planes y programas que logren integrar esta parte de la historia de Atacama y otras más, al currículum escolar, ya sea de enseñanza básica, media o universitaria, para crear una mayor y mejor conciencia social, política y territorial, y a su vez contribuir con el desarrollo integral de la región y del país.

“Sería bueno que de una vez por toda -y hago este llamado- esta parte de la historia entre a las aulas, pese a que sé que en tercero y cuarto medio ya no va a ser obligatorio, pero deberíamos buscar alguna estrategia pedagógica para que esta parte de la historia se conserve”, comenta.

Sin embargo, sus sugerencias, parece ser, que no han sido escuchadas, y en consecuencia los ciudadanos nacidos y criados en esta tierra norteña desconocen a profundidad la obra del plutócrata, ensayista, poeta, escritor y, además, caudillo que “inflamó los espíritus juveniles y más románticos de aquella época” tanto en Atacama como en el resto de Chile.

Tal vez pocos se acuerdan que, como un hombre de acción, Pedro León Gallo participó en la junta de minería, sirvió como regidor, lo que hoy día sería concejal y después fue el primer y único intendente de Atacama electo por “voluntad popular”; más tarde fue comandante en jefe de las Fuerzas del Norte, con cuyas tropas intentó vencer al ejército chileno en la Batalla de Los Loros.

Su lucha, para aquel entonces, guarda algo de relación con la manifestación social que hoy en día protagonizan millones de personas a lo largo de todo Chile: «abolir la constitución que llevaba 30 años y que había sido sujeto de uso y abuso de la oligarquía santiaguina, y construir una nueva con reivindicaciones sociales que hasta hoy en día están vigentes», como la educación y salud pública, así como mayor participación de las regiones.

Si bien no logró todos sus objetivos cuando se levantó en armas, su legado político dio inicio a grandes movimientos a favor de la profundización de la descentralización, la emancipación regional y también la igualdad tanto en conocimientos educacionales como en la brecha laboral para las mujeres.

Después se su derrota en la batalla del Cerro Grande, exilio y regreso a Chile, fue precandidato presidencial en 1866, ya que en el 63 había fundado el Partido Radical. También fue diputado y senador. “Resultó ser un hombre de bastante acción en la región de Atacama, cuya acción motivó a todo Chile”.

Para conmemorar el natalicio del empresario, político, minero y líder revolucionario y con el propósito de rescatar, registrar, documentar, conservar, investigar, poner en valor y difundir el patrimonio cultural que resguarda el Museo Regional de Atacama, se organizó una charla a la que fueron invitados todas las autoridades, así como establecimientos educacionales, pero asistió un grupo de niños.
